Sometimes, it’s little more than a selfish excuse
Here’s yet another occasion where parenting is plain weird: tough love. When I became a mother, I was quickly fatigued by how often people lectured me on the need for tough love. I suspect I’ve received so many comments because I’m a single mom, but I find them weird regardless of anyone’s good intentions.
Our culture is somewhat obsessed with obedient children who behave like robots. And I suppose to get them, most people expect parents to use tough love on their kids to promptly nip “bad behavior” in the bud.
Bad behavior like… temper tantrums. You know, those age-appropriate meltdowns most kids have that we try so hard to keep at bay.
